I have a daughter — she’s five years old — and, of course, she’s been enrolled in an art school since the age of three. From the very beginning, I wanted her to grow up surrounded by creativity, color, and the beauty of visual expression.

One of the little rituals we both love is collecting children’s books illustrated by great artists. It’s more than just reading together — it’s sharing wonder, imagination, and art history in a language a child can understand and feel. These books have become a quiet yet powerful bridge between generations, opening conversations about creativity, identity, and vision.

Naturally, my collection has grown — I recently added another dozen books to our shelf. And I was happy to donate several titles to Filipa’s school as well. The teachers were thrilled, and the children loved the richness of color, story, and artistic voices.

Here are just a few of the books that continue to inspire us — with links to explore further. Many of these are true gems for any family that values art and storytelling:

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen & Yayoi Kusama: A Fairy Tale of Infinity and Love Forever

Yayoi Kusama: From Here to Infinity!

Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos

Frida Kahlo: The Artist Who Painted Herself (Smart About Art)

Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing

The Keith Haring Coloring Book

David Hockney: Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm

Action Jackson

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with artwork by Yayoi Kusama

The Autobiography of a Snake — Drawings by Andy Warhol

Henri’s Scissors

My Museum

These books are not just stories — they are entry points into visual worlds, and sometimes, the first way a child meets a master. Through their pages, we explore not only artistic styles but also life choices, struggles, imagination, and beauty.

If you’re building a meaningful bookshelf for your child — or your inner child — this is a beautiful place to start.
